Personality Plus New York Dolls Fine Art Print
I have been thinking a lot about David Johansen @davidjohansen.official since February 28th when sadly they passed away. RIP David Johansen. In high school and college we spent a lot of time enjoying the intense incredibly fantastic music of the New York Dolls. One of their most iconic songs is Personality Crisis. They came up in 1971 alongside The Velvet Underground and the Stooges. At the time the band was David Johansen for their unique and perfect voice, guitarist Johnny Thunders, bassist Arthur Kane, guitarist and pianist Sylvain Sylvain and drummer Jerry Nolan. They dressed in androgynous clothing, with high heels, satin, some artful use of spandex, a splash of makeup and lipstick and BOOM, they were a band unlike any at the time.
In 2006 on November 10th, for Brad’s birthday @brad.newman we were lucky enough to see them at Berbati’s Pan in PDX. We made a night of it, went out for a nice dinner and stayed at Hotel Vintage Plaza @hotelvintagepdx. When we checked in, we realized that the opening band and the New York Dolls were also staying at the same hotel!!! Actually we were on the same floor as we heard them all come in post show at 3 am. Then when we checked out in the morning, guess who was at the counter right next to us also checking out? David Johansen!!! We had to do our best to act cool and keep our sh*t together and not bug them as they were conducting commerce at the hotel. That was the most magic moment for us though, we were so star struck!!! XOXOXO
How was the show? The musicians for the show were David, Sylvain Sylvain, Steve Conte, Sami yaffa, Brian Delaney and Brian Koonin. It was electric it was wild it was a fantastic journey and we loved every minute of it!!! Thanks to David Johansen and the New York Dolls for bringing their unique magic music to the world to make it a better place. This art is a tribute to David and the Dolls and captures the bouncy and brilliant music they gave to us.
